Orthodontic Treatment

GUIDING HEALTHY SMILES FROM THE BEGINNING

At Oberley Orthodontics, we believe that a healthy, confident smile starts with the right foundation. Early orthodontic treatment, also known as Phase 1 orthodontic treatment, focuses on identifying and addressing developing orthodontic concerns while your child's mouth and jaw are still growing. By evaluating your child at an early age, we can often guide proper jaw development, create space for permanent teeth, and help prevent more complex orthodontic issues later in life.

We proudly provide early orthodontic treatment for children and families in Zionsville, Carmel, Westfield, Whitestown, Lebanon, and the surrounding Central Indiana communities.

When should my Child see an Orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. At this stage, permanent teeth are beginning to erupt, allowing our team to identify potential concerns before they become more significant.

An early evaluation doesn't always mean your child will need treatment right away. In many cases, we'll simply monitor growth and development through our observation program until the timing is ideal. If treatment is recommended, early intervention can often make future treatment more efficient and help achieve the best possible outcome.

Your child may benefit from an orthodontic evaluation if you notice:

  • Crowded or overlapping teeth

  • Gaps or excessive spacing

  • Early or delayed loss of baby teeth

  • Difficulty biting or chewing

  • Teeth that don't meet properly

  • Thumb or finger sucking beyond early childhood

  • Mouth breathing

  • Jaw shifting, popping, or uneven growth

  • An overbite, underbite, crossbite, or open bite

Even if none of these concerns are obvious, an early orthodontic evaluation provides valuable insight into your child's developing smile.

Benefits of Early Orthodontic Treatment

Early treatment is designed to support healthy growth while reducing the need for extensive treatment later.

Depending on your child's needs, treatment may:

  • Guide proper jaw growth and facial development

  • Create space for incoming permanent teeth

  • Correct harmful bite problems early

  • Reduce the risk of impacted teeth

  • Improve chewing and speech development

  • Help protect protruding teeth from injury

  • Simplify or shorten future orthodontic treatment

  • Improve confidence with a healthier, more balanced smile
